« a final thought before the weekend | Main | all apologies » May 24, 2005the trifectaOn Saturday night, I started to get the aches that usually signal the begining of the flu: my neck, lower back, upper arms and backs of my hands. By Sunday morning, I could hardly get out of bed, which was sort of a problem, because I was supposed to be in a wedding. So I took it easy all morning, took a mega-dose of cold medicine right before the ceremony started, and did a nice job in an incredibly beautiful ceremony. I spent most of the reception in a chair, which meant I was a pretty lousy date for my stunningly beautiful wife, but as usual she never wanted for a dance partner. Sunday night, I woke up nearly suffocating on the phlegmy shit in my throat, in so much pain I couldn't swallow. I think I slept for about 52 minutes and when I woke up I couldn't even talk. Good times, lots of really good times. Monday morning I started running a fever, averaging about 101.5. So I gave in, admitted I was sick, and saw my doctor this morning. Holy mother of shit. I hit the trifecta:
So that sort of explains why I have felt so tired for the last two weeks, and why nothing I do seems to make this infection get any better. My doctor has ordered me to stay in bed for at least the next week, and he said that it will take anywhere from ten days to two months to completely get over the infections, so I'm probably not going to be able to finish the ACME run, and since I can't fly, I don't get to go speak at the Red Hat conference on June 1. Because this is all viral, all I can do is take stuff to help me feel not quite so bad, and because it's mono, I have to rest for about three hours to get fifteen good minutes of anything done. I probably won't be updating my blog very much for the next seven or ten days. If you're waiting for your Just A Geek from the fundraiser, I'm about half-way through. I'm doing my very best to get them all signed and shipped, but I hope everyone understands that I'm at about 30% right now. Okay, time to go sleep again. Good God. Sending lots of "get well" thoughts your way. I had mono in college. Beware of the nap attacks--the "outta the way, must sleep NOW" things. That's the funny thing about mono: you can work through colds, sinus infections, some flu, after a day or two, but mono makes you sit your ass down and keep it down. But you know that already. And don't let that first day of really feeling better fool you and get all ambitious because you'll still probably have to nap 18 times a day. If you haven't already, get some steroids from the dr. for that throat. It'll help bring down the swelling and make it easier to, you know, breathe. Okay, enough. I'm reminding me of my dad, and that's no good. Take it easy, Wil. Posted by: Stacey at May 24, 2005 04:09 PM
Ok, I just realized that I'm writing as if you're dead. You're not dead are you? Maybe you are and this is all a WilBot. That would be kinda cool. Sad at first, sure. But after we sit shiva for you: kinda cool. Admit it. Later, --AJ Posted by: AJ at May 24, 2005 04:10 PM
Hrm.. I don't suppose it would be too much to ask for you to put my copy through one of those USPS grade sterilizer thingies, would it? I don't mind the crinkled and brittle pages, really, I don't. ;-D Posted by: JeffD at May 24, 2005 04:11 PM
I had Mono once. It sucked!! Water, Apple Juice, etc...... You'll feel much better, trust me. Posted by: Rich at May 24, 2005 04:17 PM
Mono... the "kissing disease"???? BAD WIL!!! I had Mono when I was a sophomore in high school. I was in the hospital for 3 days, and out of school for a month. Lost about 25 lbs. too. Never figured out how I got it. My german teacher had it, and so did a kid in the back of class (we never kissed)....lol. I know how bad you feel. I really do. You have permission to moan and groan. Pouting is ok too. Being a poo-poo head is not allowed however. Be sure to watch the Star Wars Saga and maybe the Aliens series while you are down. I would say watch Star Trek movies, but.... Take it easy and try to relax and get better. -Kel Posted by: kelsquatch at May 24, 2005 04:27 PM
Yikes!!! Feel better, wil! If it brings a smile to your face, know that last night I flopped four aces and still lost (guy with J2 caught a royal)... augh! Posted by: tim at May 24, 2005 04:27 PM
AWWWW...so sorry that you cannot participate in everything that you planned. :( Just take it easy, Mono is no joke, and you need alot of rest to get rid of it. I wish you the best, feel well Wil. :) Q Posted by: Quincey at May 24, 2005 04:35 PM

Oh, dude, that's the suck. I had Mono in college and ended up having to do a medical withdrawl from the entire semester it was so bad. Rest ALOT. Make people pamper you. Take care of yourself. Posted by: Clay at May 24, 2005 04:44 PM
Wow. Take it seriously and rest *ALOT* or else you'll wind up like me...most people only get mono once, I've had it 4 or 5 times (probably just never really got over it...) And trust me, the more often it rears its ugly head the worse it is. Now is when your TV and DVD player can be your best friend...just rest and vegetate, because nothing else matters if you get so freaking sick you can't function. Posted by: Thumper at May 24, 2005 04:44 PM
Oh Wil, I'm so sorry you're not feeling well. As soon as I read "so much pain I couldn't swallow," I thought "mono." When I had it in college, I spent a week wanting to take my throat and put it on a shelf somewhere away from myself because it hurt so much. Take it easy. Even when you're feeling better, it will still sap your strength and you can relapse if you push yourself too hard. Make sure to call your doc if you still have trouble breathing. Also, no rough-housing. If I recall correctly, it's the spleen that gets enlarged and has the potential to rupture. Wow, I never thought my first comment here would be so dire-sorry 'bout that. In any case, I hope the worst of the throat pain dissipates quickly. And on an unrelated note: I really enjoy your blog, and I laughed out loud many times while reading "Just a Geek." I don't know how I made it this far in life without having encountered the word "cockpunch," and I thank you for introducing it to me. Posted by: claire at May 24, 2005 04:50 PM

Talk about Deja Vu. Summer before high school I was doing this I don't even remember what it was, middle school acting workshop or something. We were doing this rinky dink little one act called 'Take Five' at the local theatre center. Even overweight, I'd still been struggling just to get through the three hour rehearsals and set builds and shit. Two weeks before show time mommy dearest finally let me see a doctor, and lo and behold, I had mono. The doc said t'was a mild case, but it still knocked me on my fat ass. I completely know how you feel. I was lucky in that I still managed to muddle through the piddly two performances of the show that we gave, but I think I literally slept the rest of the day of each one. I'd say lay back and let a cute house boy run errands for you, but I think watching the season premiere of 'Queer as Folk' is overly influencing me right now. So I'll just say do what your body tells you to and rest. Get well soon, Jess Posted by: Jess Gasparini at May 24, 2005 05:12 PM
WTF, Wil. What the hell am I supposed to do without WWdN!? Tell me, hmmm? Aiieeee! *Tears hair out, wails and gnashes teeth while writhing in pain... real Biblical stuff, btw*

Mono is a pain in tha ass. A friend caught it at school and it set him back a year. Hope you breeze through it though. Oh, he [my friend] got severe muscle pains and found that a pain-killing gel helped a lot... it was either ibuprofen or voltarol based, I can't remember which exactly, but I think it was the voltarol that was the best for him. Good luck dude, I mean it. I wish you well. PS On a more light-hearted note, your CSI episode was just aired in the UK! Nice work, but are you now going to be worried about being typecast as shambling twitchfest tramps with a penchant for odd wigs? Posted by: Ben O at May 24, 2005 05:17 PM
Yes, listen to the nice, smart people Wil. I had mono in high school, missed a month of class, and it will stay with you for a good year. It's great for a quick diet, but mostly just sucks. And good advice not to go crazy when you feel better. I felt better one day and headed to the paino to pass the time, after one line I had to get my Mom to help me back to the couch. Take care. Sorry dude, Seriously NOT to rub it in, but since I spend 8 -10% of my workday reading your posts and the comments I have to note a huge number of your fan base has been trying to clue you in to your imminent collapse! [ The way to interpret that comment is me noting you have a lot of people who actually care what happens to you (or at least to WWDN)] Unsolicited medical advice from a board-certified internist? Super-infection (ie a bacterial infection landing on top of a viral infection and going nuts) is a definite possibility, so if you remain febrile despite oral antibiotics, motrin and acetaminophen - have a low threshold to bother your doc again. Just a little sicker and you'd easily meet criteria for admission for IV antibiotics. [Caveat: advice is usually worth what you paid for it] Live long and... well you know... Posted by: Iakaris at May 24, 2005 05:30 PM
I truly hope that you will get better sooner rather than later. Having all three at once can really suck, but just take it easy, and the yucky diseases are bound to leave your body much quicker. Oh dear, Wil! Be very very careful! I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a thing I didn't believe in much but there it is, and now I'm an expert. (Life gets its revenge doesn't it.) I've had it for 10 years, and a bout of insomnia, cold and flu while caregiving my husband for a year may have triggered it but there's no way to know. I didn't listen to my body and tried to be superwife while hubby recovered. Countless doctors and money later I'm still sick with no end in sight. And now my husband has to take care of me, and everything else, too much. We all enjoy you so much Wil, we'd rather you be there for the long haul. We're ready and willing to be patient for the short one. Do some 'aggressive resting'. And heed the warnings of all the previous posters! Posted by: karenls at May 24, 2005 05:34 PM
Jeekers! That's a lot of sick. I wish you a speedy recovery and a relaxing convalescence. On a selfish note, I am truly bummed that you won't be able to finish the ACME run. I hadn't been able to make it yet and was still hoping to see you. Posted by: Annika at May 24, 2005 05:46 PM
Wil, I don't know if you've had mono before, but it's pretty nasty stuff. You'll start feeling better, but rest up until you're sure it's gone. I had mono off and on for three months in middle school because I felt better and decided I was okay before I actually was. Rest up, man. We're with you. Wil, you MUST REST. This sounds monotonous coming from all these people - but I've had mono _3 times_, including the Christmas when my wife and I were treated like lepers by relatives I don't talk to anymore :/ I managed to lose 35 pounds in 2 weeks the first time I had it - you could see my spleen against the wall of my stomach - I'm 6'8", and I was down to under 185 lbs - it nearly killed me, and took me a good two years to feel myself again - mainly because I tried to do too much too soon after the first bout. Steroids DO help with the inflammation (although my throat swelled shut anyway), but they make me grumpy (see above mention of my vertical stature - folks don't like me being grumpy). It's an odd illness, and you're likely to get sick for the first six months or so after you're diagnosed, with other niggling things - go to the docs and get treated quick. at May 24, 2005 06:50 PM
Take care and get well, Wil. I think that all of the people here will still be here waiting for you when you get better. On a positive note for all of us, though...a week or so of not having to hear about poker! (Said with a laugh). Posted by: Decados at May 24, 2005 07:10 PM

Posted by: pyrofenix at May 24, 2005 07:17 PM
Oh Wil, you have my utmost empathy. I had that exact trifecta, and it took out my entire second semester of college. My throat was so bad I was in the campus infirmary for almost a week, during which time at one point I surfaced from one of my 23-hour naps to find a bunch of med students from UConn hovering over my bed, being told by a doctor "take a good look kids, you'll probably never see a throat this bad again!" (At that point I decided that since death was obviously imminent, I might as well get some more sleep. :}) As many others here have said, the key is not to overdo it too soon. Pace yourself, and force yourself to get back into life slowly. Get well soon!!! Posted by: meredith at May 24, 2005 07:38 PM
Hey Wil, I know that it's very exhausting! I had it 9 years ago. I was living with my parents then and my room was in the basement. The washroom and the kitchen were upstairs. I would have to stop and rest at the top of the stairs every morning; I couldn't just continue on to where I was headed. It gives you a new found respect for people with serious illnesses. I have never experienced something so draining. Your mind is there, but your body will not comply. I got better though and so will you! Rest, rest, and rest some more!! Dude......That Bites. I Was going to hear you speak in New Oleans. Was I the only person to not to get Mono in College; but there was a girl in my College art Class got it. ahhhh, mono - the high school graduation gift I wish I could've returned! I was diagnosed with mono and strep just before I left for college, and the situation improved once I got on the meds - steroids for the strep and amoxicillin for the mono (or is that the other way around?) Turns out the 'roids can mask drug allergies, but I went off them before the 'cillin, so I was able to discover that I have a nasty reaction to that. stay relaxed, ppl will be understanding about the books, just so long as you don't lick them or spit in them at least... Mono is about the suckiest virus to have it lasts so damn long and you don't feel so ill you can't do anything and when you do something it drains you so much you end up feeling even worse for the rest of the day. Take you Dr's advice get lots of rest and relaxation, if you feel up to doing something slightly strenuous don't you will only feel ten times worse after. Ouch, I had glandular fever (which is what we call mono in the UK) back when I was 19. I know it knocks some people for six, but after spending a week on my parent's couch sleeping through daytime TV (fell asleep during the littlest hobo, woke up during quincy - I spent a lot of my waking time very confused) I was more or less ready to join the land of the living. Take it easy mate, drink lots of fluid - I found those del monte tins of fruit in fruit juice nice and easy to eat when my throat wasn't up to much and my tummy was too tired to eat! Get well soon! Posted by: Claire at May 25, 2005 04:24 AM
Netean - mono (full name mononucleosis, or something like that) is a US name for glandular fever, which is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. It's beem going around my university lately (Newcastle, UK), so it's definitely not just an American thing! Erro xx Posted by: Errodiel at May 25, 2005 04:37 AM
I got mono [glandular fever] first in 1985 and again in 2003. I had no idea you could get it twice. The first bout was rather extreme (I was barely conscious for over a month) and kicked off chronic fatigue, which is, I understand, not the norm. You'll probably feel crappy for quite a while, but I'm sure you'll be fine. Just have the doc check for temporary spleen enlargement, as that can happen, and it can be a problem if you're physically active. All the best. Posted by: Kaz at May 25, 2005 05:18 AM
Oh, karenls - I found that sleep therapy has helped enormously with my chronic fatigue. 20 years of The Amazing Collapsible Immune System appears to have been offset by a few months of behavioural therapy, which has meant that I sleep properly every night and actually wake up feeling human. The doc says that she doesn't know if I still have CFS or not, but that my immune system has been so boosted by the regular deep sleep that I am functioning like a healthy person. 5 months without illness. Check out the National Sleep Foundation [www.sleepfoundation.org/] - it might work for you. Posted by: Kaz at May 25, 2005 05:26 AM

I'm just getting over a sinus infection myself, so while I was spared mono and tonsilitus, I can definitely identify with feeling like your head is full of cement. I don't know if it is available in the U.S., but I've heard good things about a ginseng-based cold medication called ColdFX. Might be worth a try. Otherwise, rest up and take it easy. Maybe you can proove your doctor wrong about the recovery time. :-) Posted by: Joe at May 25, 2005 05:59 AM

Dang! And here I was feeling sorry for myself because I woke up with a sore throat this morning. That royally sucks! So sorry about all the stuff you're going to miss out on, too. Holy Shit! I'm very sorry to hear that you have Mono. I had that when I was in 8th grade and it kept me out of the last two months of school and in bed for at least 5 wks, 2 of which I can't remember as I was rarely awake. Oh, I also lost like 30lbs and quite a bit of muscle tone. But I was a very sickly child and I'm SURE you are in much better physical shape and will not have the same ill effects. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! Posted by: squeekybuddha at May 25, 2005 06:51 AM
Hey look! Someone else over seventeen has mono! I'm twenty seven and was suffering for a month before going to the doctor at the start of May and getting diagnosed. me: Hey! Wil Wheaton has mono, too! And with that I say I'm over the "kissing disease" jokes. As my physician told me, "Sleep when you are tired." It's taken me about six weeks to get from near-death-like to making it through the day without an hour nap. Feel better soon. Posted by: mitt at May 25, 2005 07:00 AM
thanks everyone for the clarity. It's all so clear now :) Sucks a big fat one. I had Glandular Fever/Mono when I was 12. Get the echinacea out! My mother gave me guiness (Slightly watered down, but sadly not watered down enough!!!!!) and fresh coffee. Worked for me. Although I am a cafeine junkie, alcoholic hypnochondriac now :) at May 25, 2005 07:01 AM

There's a hat trick nobody cheers for... I have Epstien-Barr Mono, it's the best mono in the World! It never goes away, it just lies dormant, then if you get yourself sick or really run down, BAM! GOTCHA BITCH! It goes active...and subsequently puts you on your ass for a good 2 weeks. There is a bright side though, when I get sick, I become the worlds largest candy-ass, and my wife feels bad for me in my ill state and waits on me hand and foot, it's really sweet. I was sick this past weekend and she went to the store and bought me Chef Boyardee Ravioli (my favy) and Airplane/Airplane II on DVD. Get well, at May 25, 2005 07:12 AM
Wil, you do realize that this is the perfect opportunity to have someone dig out an original Nintendo and all the games that go with it and play until you (a) can't feel your thumbs or (b) fall back to sleep. Well, that's how I survived over a month of nasty viral infection. Seriously - rest and drink lots of water, juice, and chicken soup. Don't worry about us - we'll be here when you get well enough to come back to us. Just take care of yourself and hold the couch down. I'm sending you all the get-well-soon mojo I can muster. Hi Wil. Long time reader, first time poster. Just one more thought about the mono (I went through a bout of it myself). Since it's so difficult to eat, I had a couple of protein shakes every day -- made with vegetarian protein powder, banana, and ice. Simple, but it kept me from starving while I was recovering AND got some much needed protein into my bod. I wish you a swift and strong recovery. Posted by: Maria at May 25, 2005 07:36 AM

I've had that particular trifecta myself, I was in third grade and was duly picked on when I returned to school after 6 weeks of being out with "the kissing disease" I remember the steroid shot and that John Lennon was killed right before I returned to school. I was knocked on my ass again last year with it - this time 2 solid months of feeling like shit...Take care of yourself, sleep and then sleep some more, I hope you feel better soon. Gentle, restful healing hoped for you. The timing's really too bad, as I'm going to be in LA next week for 10 days (6/3-13). I was hoping to pull a Hooter's waitress reprise (Boogaloo, of course) and beg you to sign my books (or maybe my iBook :P) after the show at ACME. Ah well, c'est la vie... I'm just bummed; you're the one sick and miserable. You just gotta ride it out. Hang in there, and take good care of yourself. Posted by: naiah christine earhart at May 25, 2005 08:16 AM

Your body caught this because it's wanting you to slow down and take care of yourself more. Bodies have a way of doing a smackdown on us when we don't heed the little warnings. Mono is nasty stuff! Get LOTS of rest & don't try to do too much. It's good that you've got meds, because, left uncaught/untreated, mono can develop into lots worse stuff. Get well vibes are certainly winging your way from many places around the globe! Posted by: KLoebrich at May 25, 2005 09:02 AM
I'm sorry this is hitting you all at once. Hopefully you'll feel better soon. My experience with mono is extremely different from that of the other posters. I managed to get mono from my sister just after graduating high school... and right before I was supposed to leave on a three week trip to Europe. My doctor said that I could still go, as long as I kept away from dairy and citrus. Supposedly, its the way your body processes these two that really makes you tired, and having an excess could rupture something (I forget what). At any rate, I had enough energy during the trip, lost a few pounds, and was just fine once I was back home. I still think mono was the best disease I've ever had. :) Posted by: Taleri at May 25, 2005 09:42 AM

Hi Wil, Sorry about the mono. I had it 7 years ago. It was the sickest I've ever been. It took the doctor a long time to figure out what was wrong with me. I was considered too old (27) for mono. It wasn't until my liver quit functioning temporarily, and he did a blood test. My urine was dark and my eyes were yellow. I had the worst body aches and headache ever - like someone was trying to turn me inside-out through my forehead! I couldn't eat or sleep. I just cried. I bet you're back on your feet soon, but pay attention to that tired, dragging feeling and allow yourself to rest when you need it. They say it never really leaves you. OHMIGOSH...I'm not alone. And neither are you Wil. I was diagnosed with Mono last Wednesday. Sure does explain a lot. Of course it doesn't make you feel any better. I'm so sorry you are feeling this bad too. Take comfort that there is a lump on a sofa in Tennessee that feels just as bad as you do. Hopefully we'll both be better soon. FYI - my mom hooked me up with a supplement called Monobrex that's suppose to kick it quick. You might want to check it out. Available online and arrived in just a few days. I'm only 2 days in - I'll let you know if it makes a difference. Posted by: Mel at May 25, 2005 10:08 AM
If Wikipedia is any guide, you also need to avoid aspirin and be careful with paracetamol, but ibuprofen seems to be OK. So get some rest, Yuppie! 8-) at May 25, 2005 10:15 AM

Ugh! I'm so sorry! I think one of the worst things about being laid up sick is that you have "free" time but can't do anything with it! I recommend the Quadruple Cocktail: I used to get sick a lot. With asthma and various allergies, my immune system has never been up to snuff. But since I started taking Nutrilite vitamins I rarely get more than the sniffles. Double X Multivitamin/mineral daily. Damn dude... I had mono when I was in high school along with strep, so I have buckets, nay barrels of sympathy for you. It sucked like a thing that sucks a lot. Apparently this is Nature's way of telling you to sit the hell down for a bit and you best listen. I mean it. Rest, sleep, consume healthy foods and liquids and try to keep the crankies to a low roar. Do not think you are better just because you feel ok one day. This crap takes time to work out of your body. I wish you a speedy recovery and best wishes to Anne in taking care of your illin' butt. Posted by: Emily_Nelfnoffen at May 25, 2005 12:53 PM
For what its worth, my wife and I just went through the same thing in February. It started the same, we both developed Strep infections (thank God for Antibiotics!) and then spent the next six weeks with something that acted alot like mono. Along with exhaustion, watch for liver pains and expect to be completely "spaced out" whenever you try to work/blog. The kids tend to get less severe sympthoms, but you and your spouse may be out for the next month or two, or three... Posted by: WasSup at May 25, 2005 01:15 PM
Get well soon, Wil. One thing I enjoy about feeling a bit (or a LOT) under the weather is that there is no expectation that you be 'productive.' Nap. Read. Nap again. Drink tea. Catch some TV. Nap. I downloaded your Gnomedex readings to my iPod and listened to them as I flew to San Jose on business earlier this week. What a hoot. Luckily I had a cool seatmate who simply smiled at me when I giggled. And what a pleasure to hear familiar stories read aloud. I won't be able to watch William **** Shatner in anything in the future without getting an unfortunate visual courtesy of Spiner's toupee comment. ;-) Listen to your doctor and lay low for a bit so this crap doesn't boomerang back on you. Get well - karmelrio P.S. Do you ever think it's weird that thousands of people you've never met are so wired in to your life? I've lurked here for years, have just posted a few times, but I just want to thank you for letting us get to know you. You have many e-friends. Whether that makes you happy or squicks you out ??? There have been a ton of college mono horror stories, so I won't share (much of) mine, other than to comment that my mono started to come in earnest in early August and it was late October before I kicked it. Of course, that was almost twelve years ago, so I bet medical science has better answers on how to manage it than I did. Otherwise: if you want a truly surreal experience, now might be a good time to dig out The General in His Labyrinth, just for the sheer synchronicity of reading about Simón Bolivar’s night sweats and interminable illness while you’re experiencing the very same thing! I still think that Gabriel Garcia-Marquez must have been suffering from mono or something like it when he wrote that book. Posted by: Tim Jarrett at May 25, 2005 06:44 PM
I totally feel your pain. I got it twice (yeah, it can recur, but it's rare) in 2000 and had to drop out of grad school. Aw man, I read mono and my body cringed. You can feel special, it is *very* rare to get mono once your early 20s! I'm one of those unlucky people that had confirmed mono three times. As your doctor said it can take up to two months to clear out, it can take up to 18 months to fully recover. Chocolate milk is your friend, so is ice cream. Sleep is also your friend. I remember having to take an hour nap every time I went to the bathroom, not to mention my liver and spleen were so swollen I had to hold them while walking stairs. Oh the joy of mono. I really hope you get over this soon, and no matter what, rest is your best friend. It can get really frustrating, especially once your mind recovers from being sick and your body is still battling mono. Wish you all the best... at May 25, 2005 11:42 PM

Wil mono sucks! Heaps and loads of get well mojo coming your way from DC. I kicked mono in 2 weeks...sort of a "mind over body" mentality. Ugh! I got hit by a massive cold like a freight train. Sounds alot like your. It started with a slight tickle in my throat one morning. By that evening it I was BLAMO... hit by the train. Hope mine isn't as severe as your. As I have no health insurance (ain't America great?) I have to keep my doctors visits to a minimum. So I'll wait it out to see if it gets worse...so far it seems to be getting better. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Get well soon! Posted by: smiggles at May 26, 2005 09:44 AM
Thanks, everybody. The swelling in my throat is down, and the sinus pressure is easing up a little bit at the medication starts to work. I'm still exhausted, but at least I'm not in quite as much pain as I was yesterday. I'm still exhausted, which I understand is normal with mono, and is how I can count on feeling for at least the next two weeks. Ugh. Hi Wil, Just wanted to let you know that I fell ill with mono the day I returned from my honeymoon back in June 2002 aged 30. It was hell. I got it so bad that I could barely drink for the first couple of weeks. I ended up having to have three litres of saline through a drip just to stay hydrated. Don't plan on doing anything at all in the next month or so and when you do start to do things again take it slow. I mean really slow. I'll be praying for ya. Remeber take as much fluids as you can and rest. David Posted by: David Sandey at May 26, 2005 03:15 PM
I had mono + terrible sinus infection a few years ago. It was nasty. Drink a lot of water, watch for recurring sinus infections once you heal up. Feel better. Posted by: bradsucks at May 26, 2005 03:45 PM
Mono actually turned me into a Star Trek fan. I remember when I came down with it, Star Trek: The Next Generation just came out in syndication and one of the channels was running the episodes almost constantly. I remember laying in my bed, watching Star Trek, being too tired to move, much less change the channel. Good times... Well, not really, but at least I gained one positive from the experience, since I'm still a fan. Get well soon... Posted by: sampo24 at May 26, 2005 05:00 PM
Ugh, I had a serious case of mono in highschool that knocked me out for 3 months. The kicker was that they couldnt figure out what I had at first, because I had hives all over, and fatigue as my main two symptoms. They took gallons of blood to test before the doc said 'you know, hives are a rare side effect of mono, maybe you have that' and they tested me and bingo, positive. Feel better Wil :) Posted by: hikahi at May 26, 2005 05:06 PM
Hey Wil. First, hope your illness lasts as little as possible and that you feel better soon. Did your doctor prescribe any steroids (like prednisone) for the swelling in your throat? Also, 90% of the time mono is caused by Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) but it can also be due to Cytomegalovirus (CMV). If you have the CMV, there is a drug that can help, Ganciclovir. I can relate to the whole throat swollen deal. Last February I had a nasty PTA (peritonsillar abscess) (http://icarus.med.utoronto.ca/carr/manual/pta.jpg) . Very nasty stuff. Came very close to needing surgery for it. Anyways, hope you feel better soon. Drink lots of fluids, don't get dehydrated. Posted by: Ana Marylee at May 26, 2005 09:29 PM
Crisis on a cracker, what a horrid combo. Mono is a bit embarassing after 22 or so. Sooooo many bad jokes. Sleep until you are slept out, then after the Himalayan journey to the john go back to sleep. Try to get something down everytime you wake up. Real fruit shakes and smoothies are great if you have a good blender. Don't rush the process. Better a few extra days of being Slugly Doright than a relapse. We'll all be here when you get back. Posted by: Sandi at May 27, 2005 04:03 AM
On a more hopeful note, I had strep and mono at the same time in college and got past the worst of it in the first week or two. I was still more tired than usual for the rest of the semester, but was back in classes and functional after that second week. Listen to everyone else's advice and get well soon! I'm here to join the chorus of over-20-and-had-mono-recently. In my case, it was three years ago at age 26. The best advice I can give you is to pay close attention to your own level of fatigue for at least the next six months or so. If your experience is anything like mine, you'll feel like you are back up to 90% of normal in a month... but you'll still find yourself getting tired at odd and inconvenient times. When this happens, you *must* rest. You may feel like a big sissy for feeling tired when you think you really shouldn't be tired, and you may try to push yourself through the fatigue. Don't. And for the next couple of weeks, make like a vegetable--plant yourself somewhere and drink lots of water. I'll send lots of anti-mono mojo your way, Wil. Posted by: tikilovegod at May 27, 2005 10:00 AM
Hey, Wil, Just caught up with your blog. Very sorry to hear about the Trifecta. You have my empathy, both regarding the illness and the general public's lack of understanding. I've been dealing with a nasty recurring food allergy this week...apparently eggs, of all things! Third or fourth attack in two years, this time bad enough for an ER visit. Next week, I'll finally get the serum (blood) allergy test to confirm and /or rule out culprits. No more Eggs Benedict for me, I fear...! Since laughter is the best medicine... Okay so no one knows who I am, but that's okay. That's what a first comment is for right? Just a fan since I was 12 (but I'm not that old now anyway) that stumbled across this a little while back and have been checking in. I gave up reading all the comments have way through. I didn't know so many people had mono! Of course, I wouldn't go to the doctor even if I did. I muddle through sore throats with Singer's tea, chicken noodle soup and orange juice. And now, I'm leaving because everyone else has said as much or more, but I do hope you feel better Wil. I thought my sore throat was bad, but I think us singers have a tendency to be dramatic over voice loss. Posted by: Jackie at June 2, 2005 01:26 PM
Just a reply to a few previous posters: mono is a virus, can only be contracted once, although as with all viruses, immune deficiencies may cause a chronic condition. EBV also reacts badly with antibiotics, and many people develop a rash that mimics an alergic reaction to penicillin; it's not, nor is it at all unusual, and it will go away. The virus alters the white blood cells it comes into contact with, elevating their levels in the blood; they steal nutrients, hence fatigue. So, the best advice? When tired, rest, 'cause the body just *can't* do what you're asking it to do. Get well soon, Wil! You will... eventually! Posted by: zallen at June 2, 2005 06:51 PM
