i am not a number! i am, rather, a series of numbers, painted across my fingernails

binarymanicure.jpgThis comes from Warren Ellis' blog (which I am stunned to realize wasn't in my RSS subscriptions until about 42 seconds ago), via boingboing.

Quoth Xeni:"This is so 0111001101110111011001010110010101110100."

I was reading this blog entry at wilwheaton.net and this <0111001101110111011001010110010101110100> string of binary is there. I knew I had a bookmark to a web site that would convert binary to text and vice versa. I couldn't find it so I typed "bin... [Read More]

Wil, there are only 10 kinds of people that even get Binary.
Those that do and those that don't!

Posted by: buntz [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 12:00 PM

Wasn't that the name of a Next Gen episode?

Posted by: watcher652 [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 12:11 PM

I hope you did the toes as well.

And does you mother know you did that?

Posted by: Nyarl [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 12:11 PM

I loved that photo! And the first comment is great!

I want my nails done like that.

Posted by: I am the Wookiee [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 01:33 PM

That's even dorkier than the Pi shirts they have @ the MIT bookstore -- pi symbol on the front, pi calculated out to about 100 digits on the back...

Posted by: BOCK [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 01:41 PM

That is so awesome! I really want my nails done like that... if I could stop biting them. Though I haven't in a while, so it's possible.

Posted by: Sangri [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 01:50 PM

That is so very "sweet." I might try writing an entire post in binary. I may take me sometime though.

For those who like words and rhyme you should try Rhymerator 1.0. It helps you be a rapper. I've tried it but judging by some of my rhymes I'm not ready to join 50 cent just yet.

hey wil, first time poster, long time reader. Cool nails, i have the same ones in pink

I 01101100011011110111011001100101 YOU WIL.

Binarilly yours,
Kelly

Aww man, *I* want fingernails like that!! Unfortunately, I have no skill at all with a nail brush. And if a press-on nail company made them, then they'd be main stream, and I wouldn't want 'em any more :)

Posted by: battybeyond [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 03:24 PM

How cool is that?! I want! I want!

Posted by: LolaGabanna [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 03:31 PM

I wonder if these would be cooler if they were "The Matrix" green...

Posted by: Mike Stanczyk [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 03:54 PM

I was waiting for you to say, "What does mine say?"
"01100100011101010110010001100101!!! What does mine say?"
"0111001101110111011001010110010101110100!!"

Maybe I am just being overly skeptical, but the numbers appear to have been added to an existing pic through Photoshop? (Oh the trouble I go through to not use "Photoshop" as a verb!)Look at the tips of the fingernails. The numbers appear to travel past the nail. It's particularly noticeable on the index finger and the thumb.

Posted by: Kevin M. [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 04:14 PM

OMBWTFLOLBBQ! It's the Binars, Wil!

Posted by: Kevbo [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 04:45 PM

Awesome.

Posted by: VeronicaKnight [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 04:54 PM

If it's not photoshopped, it's because it's a decal type application. That's why it wraps around. And those fake nails can be REALLY thick.

Posted by: Meeker [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 05:19 PM

I saw you on VH1. It was cool.

Posted by: brian [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 05:59 PM

yep, just saw you on VH1 and you rock, dude \m/

Although I would have ranked you higher up, but that's just me. Damn, but I wish you were in a series now. (Personally, I was rooting for you to play God on Joan of Arcadia -- stupid CBS.)

My son yells down the stairs, turn on VH1! I do and it's Wil talking about his books and his web site and his faithful blog bats! Cool!

Posted by: jubalation [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 15, 2005 07:36 PM

I miss out on everything. I guess the downside to not having cable is I miss when cool stuff is on. Of course, I just had a guy say he didn't know me because I was reading a Star Trek: TNG book. Such is life.

Not to be a geek but,,,

Is this ASCII, or UTF-8 encoding?

*hides somewhere quickly.*
Mercy, Mercy, I joke! I kid!

Posted by: Margath [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 16, 2005 02:11 AM

Uh oh. I have no idea what ASCI or UTF-8 encoding means. I hope that's not a prerequisite for geekdom. Maybe I can slide in under the radar.

Very cool - I had to mention this on my blog to spread it around my family & friends!

I am offically a complete geek now I think!

One can only hope that this is a trend limited to nails on finger, thumb and toes.

I wouldn't want this trend to find its way on a row of front teeth, though a customized set of dentures might be fun ;)

Posted by: Nathan Lanier [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 16, 2005 03:23 PM

That's about the coolest thing I've ever seen.

Posted by: Devyn [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 16, 2005 04:05 PM

I'm a loser but the original boingboing post indicated "That's all I have to say, but if you read it backwards there's an added message from Satan at no charge." I can't convert it but she says that it spells SilverAJ. Backwards, that's "Jarevils." I don't get it... J ar evils? Jar evils? Anybody clue me in?

i also saw you on VH1, and i wouldn't have if my little sister hadn't decided to invade the basement and change the channel. i also linked to your website on my website. would've sent an encrypted email, but couldn't figure it out to save my life...

Posted by: shewhobeatsass [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 16, 2005 09:30 PM

Wow. Now That's cool. Very origional. I like it.

Posted by: Catherine [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 17, 2005 08:58 AM

Very nice. I declined to figure it out, though, as I'm trying to embrace the part of me that goes through the magic portal and to the land that resembles my desktop picture, what with the green "grass" and that fiery ball in the sky called the "sun".

Yet, the call of the code lures me back... So... Orderly...

You know, I'd like to meet a woman who had nails like that. But all I ever meet are strippers.

Posted by: jmcachran [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 18, 2005 02:45 PM

So, when did you start byte-ing your nails? A little bit ago, eh?
