shuffle up . . .

Big news coming to this space, in the next 24 hours.

Update: . . . and deal.

This is so awesome, and I'm so excited, I don't know where to begin. I'll have to write more about it tomorrow, though. I've been writing without a break for almost twelve hours, and I seriously need to get away from the damn computer.

Rampant speculation coming to this comment in mere seconds...

The Wil Wheaton Podcast perchance?

Posted by: Matthew Cox [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 07:26 PM

.. and by the way, while I'm on the first page of posts and there is a rmeote chance you'll read this, I got into filmmaking because of your performance in Stand By Me, and have been AD on features in LA, written and directed short films, and worked with Weta on Return of the King. You're an inspiration dude

Posted by: pr0fess0r [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 07:28 PM

that should have been "remote," and yes, bring on the podcasting!
I'll shut up now

Posted by: pr0fess0r [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 07:29 PM

Ooo, intriguing. Is this for ComicCon? Collectormania? New TV appearance? Impending book release?

:D

Posted by: lomara [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 07:57 PM

Hmmm.. shuffle up? Posted from the Poker department? Sounds like a pokery thing to me. No podcasting then :(

Augggh, I hate suspense...

Back to playing D&D until this big announcement is made!

Posted by: Code Pirate [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 08:53 PM

Guten Tag! I think that means 'Good luck' in German. Or maybe it's French. Pig Latin, perhaps?

Posted by: Squishter [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 09:02 PM

Wil,
I wish you the best of luck, and would love to come down the to the Rio and say Hi since I work down on the strip here in Vegas.
But if I don't get to see you, clean house and when that one good hand comes your way, TAKE THE HOUSE!

Posted by: Genesyn [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 09:04 PM

That's awesome! Congrats! But what, exactly does it mean? :)

Posted by: Clay [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 09:11 PM

omgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomg

that is so fuckin' sweet, wil. WOW WOW WOW.

I knew I should have scheduled my research trip for that week instead of two weeks ago. Oh well. This is gonna be awesome. Wow, wow, wow.

Posted by: tim [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 09:16 PM

Sweet!

Good luck in the main event... hopefully your kings will hold up for you there.

Posted by: alan [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 09:18 PM

Rock! Good luck with that. Remember: Roll with the waves.

Posted by: VeronicaKnight [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 09:20 PM

Way to go Wil!! Flop em' Dead!

Posted by: Poker Prof [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 09:21 PM

I just logged onto Pokerstars and saw the news. Congratulations and do not play your cowboys with any hesitancy.

Posted by: RavenJackson [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 09:29 PM

Someone made mention of waiting in line??? So...should I stand behind the people STILL waiting at Grauman's Chinese Theatre? ; )

WIL... I can't stress this enough... GET YOUR REST and DON'T Stress yourself back into a relapse! Just like poker, you gotta know when to play and when to wait it out. The last thing you need is to have your body "Fold". Let Anne be your objective eyes, ears, heart, and soul of you and when she says STOP you should stop.

Other than that, Have Fun! May you and Darwin have a great time at WSOP!

As for keeping us in suspense about what you are going to do here... That is such a frackin' "Writer" thing to do to us! Keep up the fun work you silly dipwad! (And I say this with love) - Dusty

Posted by: DustyTymes [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 09:35 PM

A quote from Cardplayer.com from an interview with Gus Hansen [spelling is incorrect]:

- how tight will u play on day 1 of the main event? would you fold kk to a satallite qualifer early on?

Reply by Gus Hansen:

- I have NEVER folded KK before the flop and dont intend to start right now

Posted by: RavenJackson [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 09:38 PM

That's tight Wil! I just picked up poker a few weeks ago. Still a complete n00b, I enjoy it.

Posted by: Alex [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 09:58 PM

You know, yes, this is awesome Wil. And despite that fact I really like the way you play, I've been reading long enough to know you are a modest and humble guy. Which is good, of course. :) But I think their description of your playing was a little more precise. I saw you on one of those poker shows (complete with Darwin) and PokerStars is right, you're a not player to be trifled with. Good luck. :)

Posted by: Grey Hodge [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 10:16 PM

SWEET!!!

Posted by: Meerenai [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 10:20 PM

Congratulations! I know you'll do great. We were just in Vegas :( I wanted to say also that your story of the phone call from Anne was great. I am glad she appreciates your sense of humor! (and you her's) Your blog is great -- I've only been reading for a couple weeks, but I'm hooked!

Posted by: Lazy Mommy [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 10:39 PM

See you in a few weeks!

Posted by: Dr. Pauly [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 10:54 PM

Awesome Wil!
Sounds intriguing and I cannot wait
for more details.

Posted by: Katie [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 11:00 PM

I AM THRILLED FOR YOU WIL!!!

Your skill and insight into the game has lead you to this point. Make the most of it. Enjoy every fucking second. "Use the force young jedi"... "Be the ball"... "Wax on, wax off"...

BUT YOU MUST GET YOUR REST... you don't want to relapse into Mono again. I had mono when I was 15, and it took me a month to just get to the point of tolerable. As an adult, it will take longer to recover fully. You might feel better now, but do not take advantage of this. TAKE IT EASY UNTIL JULY, then turn on your poker power and show them all what you are made of.

And don't forget about us! We want to hear all about it. Audio blog it for us if nothing else.

Kick ass Wil,
:) Kelly

Posted by: kelsquatch [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 11:01 PM

Congratulations. You'll have to compete against my old boss' boss' boss at some point -- he won the Omaha High-Low event recently.

May I request that you make an effort to popularize the name "Strong Bad" for the hand consisting of two deuces.

Posted by: Nick B [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 23, 2005 11:01 PM

THAT IS SO COOL! haha I'm totally excited for you now. I do live vicariously through you, after all.

Congratulations! [insert witty poker comment here] I'm not much up on the game, and can't really understand over half of what you write about it, but every entry you've written on poker is so darn enthusiastic that I just had to pat you on the back! btw: you look totally badass in those shades. :D Have fun! (I know you will!)

Posted by: frogger [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 01:04 AM

Nice to see you're still around and kicking. Congrats on all the happy stuff (and I can't believe you made that joke either LOL) and good luck with the poker stuff. I'll be keeping my eyes on your blog for sure - I'll add a link to it on mine as well so more ppl over this side o' the pond can have a gander...

Posted by: Kaede [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 01:59 AM

So you're in Vegas now, eh? Any chance you'll still be there when I get there Monday morning??

Posted by: bassclar [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 02:49 AM

Kick ass!

This is great news, Wil. I hope you have a hell of a time playing; it sounds like it'll be great fun. You are obviously doing something right.

Posted by: Devin L. Ganger [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 04:27 AM

Gotta love it!

Don't know much about poker, but I went out to the Onion to check your article and I have to say I love the new Onion layout. If folks have not seen it take the time to check it out.

I remember when the Onion was run by a few college drop outs in Madison Wisconsin and was strickly a free local rag.

It is still run by some college drop outs but they have moved into the big time now! Home town boys make good!

That is so cool!
Congrats Wil!

Posted by: rileymom [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 06:57 AM

This is way too cool. I am anxiously looking forward to hearing all about it. But like everyone is saying, don't push yourself too hard, or even get all worked up. REST, relax, stay focused on continuing to recover. That will help your game too, you know. Too much stress can put you on tilt, AND cause a relapse, and we can't have that!

Best of luck!

Posted by: Dave Westbay [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 06:58 AM

Holy Carp!!!

You da man. Ever since "Lying in Odessa" I've been dying to see you in action. (BTW, as hard as I've tried, I've never been able to find your episode of the hollywood home game). Now, in a couple of months you're going to be on every late night poker rerun I tune into.

Rock On!!!

Posted by: purple_baron [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 07:02 AM

Great googly moogly! That's awesome, Wil! Way to go! I only ask that you please, PLEASE regale us with tales of your poker stardom down the road. Your poker stories inspired me to start playing poker more seriously, and as I plow my way through Super System I just keep thinking of how much I love the game now. And it's ALL YOUR FAULT! :)

The first words out of my mouth when I read the link's info were ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod.....

I *love* watching poker on TV -- amazing how much luck comes into play sometimes! -- and have gotten hooked on the WSOP results the past two years.

I also love your poker stories -- extremely entertaining and they've given me some insight as to how the game is played, though I don't play myself. (I am way too easy to read.)

I'll be sending mucho poker mojo your way -- and won't speak of any hopes for your play so as not to send any bad karma to the proceedings....

Enjoy yourself! Whatever happens, you've already made us (your blog-readers) proud.

Posted by: Pat G [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 08:06 AM

Congrats man, good luck and win lots!

Posted by: DrunkMc [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 08:25 AM

Félicitations!

Did they sign Darwin, too? I'd love to get to read a writeup from him on what he thinks of all this!!

You joining the PokerStars team is like some hard-to-believe poker blogger circle becoming complete :-)

You know the poker blogger community stands united behind you!

Posted by: CJ [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 08:36 AM

Okay, very excited and wondering what's going on. Then I read on and comments galore from poker people who know what's going on! It looks like you're going to Vegas to kick ass! I wish it were going to be on t.v. or computer. That would rock. But either way, I'll be rooting for you!

Posted by: jubalation [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 08:59 AM

Wow, a free entry into the main event at the WSOP. A lot of people would love to be in your shoes. Wear them well. Good luck.

Posted by: gparker60 [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 10:49 AM

FYI, for those interesting in following wil during the event, there are some places to turn...

First, as part of Team PokerStars, poker blogger extraordinaire Brad "Otis" Willis will keep close tabs with his blogging.

Second, Dr. Pauly is doing the best live-blogging of the entire WSOP available anywhere.

Finally, pictures, news and recaps are available from the Poker Prof and company.

The Main Event, in which wil is playing, will be taped by ESPN to be shown on Tuesday nights from 9-11 pm ET over six weeks starting on October 11th. There's a very good chance wil will get some air time there, especially if he plays the way we know he can. Hopefully he'll get an episode at the featured table!

Posted by: CJ [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 12:28 PM

That's so awesome! I can't wait to see AND read all about it!!!! I love poker, and throwing in a dash of Wil Wheaton makes it that much more enjoyable to watch!

Posted by: swl-mom2Bryn [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 12:47 PM

Hey Wil, congrats! You've got my interest in poker piqued and I'm just starting to kinda play a bit. Can't wait to see and read more of your poker exploits.

In other news, I updated your Wikipedia entry for you just a bit. You know, rearranged things alittle so "child actor" wasn't the first thing you saw.

"Richard William (Wil) Wheaton III (born July 29, 1972 in Burbank, California) is a writer and father as well as a former child actor. He is best known for his portrayals of Wesley Crusher on the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) and Gordie LaChance in the film Stand By Me."

Was just messing around on the internets today and as soon as I saw that it said "was a child actor and is now a" I hit the frickin' edit button.

take care of yourself. Don't relapse!!!

Play them cowboys.

Congratulations!

Just thought I'd add to the congratulations here.

I watched Wil play in the WPT Championship event at the Bellagio, and talked to several people about his play, including noted poker author Lee Jones (author of "Winning Low Limit Hold 'em"), who also happens to work for PokerStars. I was impressed with his game, as were Lee and others.

You got game, Wil - we'll all be looking forward to watching you in the main event.

[note that Wil will also be playing in all of the events in the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker, so if you want to see his game, you can - dates will be announced in a few days, but will take place in early September. His player name is - get this - WilWheaton. Creative, no?]

Holy mother of Jehosephat! He's a-goin' to the Big One!

God, that rocks hard, Wil. I'll be looking forward to seeing you on ESPN when they show the 2005 Main Event (about forty-'leven times over the course of the next year, late at night). Here's hoping you at least finish in the money!

(Oh, and I like the name "Strong Bad" for the pocket-deuces hand..."Stinkoman" would work just as well, too. "DOUBLE DEUUUUUUCE!")

Posted by: Erbo [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 05:26 PM

Awe. Some.

That's great, Wil. Even though I couldn't follow most of the lingo in your other poker stories, I got enough of the context to be captivated by them. I can't wait for more! I suppose I should go find a "Poker For Dummies" book or site and learn the terms.

Have fun!

Posted by: AmyO [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 24, 2005 07:42 PM

Wil, you kick ass. Knowing little about poker, I still manage to get keyed up when reading your tales of the table. Your fierce intellect combined with your big heart makes you a rare bird.

The tournament is yet undecided but regardless of the outcome, you are a warrior.

Hey that's cool Wil. Maybe that will give you enough cachet to jump Carrot Top for the next Celebrity Poker Tour;)

Seriously though, now that you in with Poker Stars could you start agitating for an OS X client? Pretty please.
