July 29, 2005

0011001100110011

Thirty-three years ago today, Rick and Debbie Wheaton became my parents, and as long as I can remember, I've stayed up until at least midnight on July 28th, so I could watch the calendar turn, and commemorate the happy occasion by running around my lawn in my boxers, hollering out "IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!"

However, now that I am the distinguished age of 33, I felt a more appropriate way to mark the passage of time would be to play a Sit-n-Go at PokerStars. I sat into a game just about 11:30, hoping that I'd still be alive at midnight, and I could celebrate with a win.

Sadly, I didn't catch too many good hands, and when I finally pushed I had QTc vs KTo . . . and I didn't improve, so I finished in third place, which is still in the money, and at least I didn't lose to K4o.

I was satisfied to cash, and happy with the way I played it, and I almost went to bed, but then I thought, "Hey! It's my birthday, goddammit! If I want to play another SNG, then that's what I'm going to do." I may have put my little fist on my hip as I said it, but I can't be sure.

I sat into another one, and . . . long story short: I played a great game, caught cards when I needed them, and after a long heads-up battle, I won!

I was so excited, I ran out the front door, and raced around my lawn in my boxers, hollering, "IT'S MY BIRTHDAY! I WON AND IT'S MY BIRTHDAY! WOOO!"

Luckily for my neighbors, my birthday only comes once a year.

What the hell you doing up so late? Isn't it past your bedtime?

HAPPY 33rd Mr. W !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I turned 33 on the 12th, I'm feeling like an old lady. But I still get carded at the 21 and over establishments. Not too many 33 year olds can say that.

Hey, you can go to Dennys and get your free meal today. I did that once.

Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday dear Wiiiiiiiiii-iiiiiiiiil,
Happy Birthday to you!
...And many mooooooore!

You're right, you owe yourself a Sit-N-Go or two. Have a particularly wonderful day, and then, keep doing that, day after day, after day.

Consider the concept of living your days the way Mr. Raymer suggests we all play poker: be more concerned with, "Did I do the right thing?" instead of internally demanding and being a slave to any particularly fantastic outcome... does that make sense?

Daydream, keep fantastic goals, and remain focused as always on your highest priorities -- all of whom should be in bed at the moment. ;)

Celebratory mojo from the posse!

Happy Birthday Wil.

Glad to see it started on a high note!

Posted by: Chrispy [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2005 03:21 AM

Lucky for you there wasn't anyone hiding in the bushes while you were running around to pull down your boxers and give you 33 spankings. But that could have made for an interesting night, I suppose...

"A man came out of the bushes and spanked me 33 times! I did not know this man! Aaah!"

Happy birthday, Wil!

Happy birthday!! Hope it's a good one for ya Wil, and by that SNG win I'm thinking it will be.
I just saw Compulsion (you know, the CSI ep Wil was in) the other day (stupid Australian TV wouldn't play it) and it was so cool. And even better: next Friday's movie is Book of Days. How cool is that?
Also, I went to the zoo today. I was in the gift shop and I thought of you when I bought a plush monkey. It's name is Mojo.

Enjoy the day and may fortune shine on your every endeavour.

Not only was your birthday mentioned on the radio this morning but you were also part of the "time capsule" trivia question (short version: what year was Stand By Me released?).

Have a great one and thanks for being an inspiration.

Happy Birthday Wil.

I was playing a SNG on PokerStars last night and got busted out in 8th place. I ran head first into a Royal Flush!!!!! It took me 5 minutes to prise my jaw from the floor.

Happy Birthday. Have you noticed that all the comments coming in today are throughout the night? Do you think you have worldwide fans that post or insomniacs?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Wil! Keep rockin' as hard as you do. As I make the four-and-a-half-hour long drive to NY today, my friends and I will be singing for you. The whole damned way.

Posted by: Pai [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2005 05:03 AM

OK, I'll join the chorus. Happy Birthday, Wil, and many more! Congrats on the SNG success - don't spend it all in one place. Unless it's to enter more SNGs, of course.

Celebrate, enjoy, relax, and count your many blessings. Have a fun birthday weekend; you deserve it.

Happy 33rd, Wil! Glad I've got a couple years before I hit that 30-mark.

Of course, I saw in the 'celebrity birthday list' today that you share a birthday with the immortal Geddy Lee...they put his picture up instead of yours, though... It's hard to compete with Rush! :)

I think I missed it.

So, a very happy belated birthday. Living opposite an all-boys' school, I don't think their parents would take to it too kindly if I ran out onto my front lawn in my undies and hollered.

I think I'll try it.

You and NASA share a birthday.

I hope nothing falls off your cake.

Posted by: golfwidow [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2005 06:19 AM

Happy thirty-third birthday! I did not do much for my thirty-third but I *did* decide to have a special party later in the year. I celebrated my 33 1/3 "for the record."

Yes, I know. That's awful, but how often does a person get to celebrate a birthday *and* make a pun like that in one fell swoop?

Might I suggest that you do the same? It really could be a blast, especially since we both belong to one of the final generations where the knowledge of turntable speeds is widespread. ^_^

Posted by: tiggerbone [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 29, 2005 06:19 AM

Happy Birthday Wil. Hope you have a great day :).

In relation (somewhat) to your blooper reel post, I found a bunch of behind the scenes pictures from the first season. You were in a few. It looked like so much fun.

However, the geeky thing to do (something I've done since high school) is to look on your birth certificate, figure out the minute you were born, correct for the time zone, and celebrate then. Midnight? Pah!

ps - I once ran around the yard in just my undies, screaming my head off, but not because it was my birthday, rather because as I pulled into my driveway, I'd found a bee in my panties. And this was in the middle of the afternoon. Maybe our neighbors should start some sort of support group.

I can just imagine your neighbors wondering why someone in StarTrek underwear is dancing around outside. But I suspect that they get that a lot. ;]

Hey Wil,

Avid reader, 1st time commenter.

Just had to wish you a Happy Mutual Birthday. It's mine too, though you're a smidge older than myself ;)

(Enter total cheese)

When I was a kid I was a huge fan (still am!) and of course had a massive crush on you and loved to walk around and say we had the same birthday ... lol I still think of you every year and I'm so glad to have discovered your blog through FeedDemon.

Keep up the great work, and just so you know, I've told off the hubby for hating your character on ST - I happened to love you as Wil Crusher! ;)

You're the featured birthday boy on IMdB today too!

I wonder if its a coincedence that I had a dream about you last night?? Don't worry, it wasn't dirty, I can't remember much about it, just that you were in it.

I hope the day brings you much good stuff. Tell Anne to give you a hug for me.

The Typekey thing wouldn't let me post the past couple of days. Pissed me off. And I really wanted to post on my birthday (which was on the 27th) but I'm too late. But NOT too late for Wil's Big Day! So I'm happy I could get in today. Happy Birthday Wil. Hope your Day isn't as wild as some in the past (I only assume you had wild days) cause at your age you might not be able to handle it the day after. I only mention this cause I discovered the HARD way that at MY age (29) I can't handle it anymore. *sigh* Anyways, hope your day is spent with the people who love you the most. Love ya' and keep on doing that thing you do!

Long time reader, first time caller, well you get the idea.

I was intending to make sure that you knew that the geek population does understand binary, but it seems that many have already made the mention that it would actually be your 100001 birthday.

Though I didn't see a mention of it in the quick scan of the posts, you certainly are not 13,107 years old, as the binary title would imply.

Now I will crawl back under a rock and wonder what my wife ever saw in me.

Ah, the age-old question answered at last:

"Boxers or briefs?"

*efg*

Happy Birthday, dude. I should have known you were a fellow fire sign (Leo, Aries, and Sadge all hang together, heating the place up. Not that I put a whole lot of stock in that kind of thing...but still, it's fun!).

Congrats on the win. Next time you and the family run a relay, could you repeat your performance on the lawn, and run in just your boxers? It would be for a good cause....

Herself,
Aylaleia - Goddess of Justice and Vengeance (and younger than *you*...but not by much! :-P)

P.S. You're still "old". Men over 30 are "old", you know. It's the rule. Hubby's been "old" for 11 years...I have a thing for "old"er men. This rule does not apply to women. Ever.

Also, in my upcoming book, "Sun Signs for Writers," I list you under the section "Who's Who Among Leo Writers." You're ranked right along with old-time, classic writers. 'Cause I figure in 100 years Wil Wheaton will BE a classic writer :)

Sir, it comes to my attention that we have the same birthday. I, for one, am honored to say that I was born the same day that the ubergeek himself....turned 12 I guess.....I've lost all credibilty now. Happy birthday to us!!!

Posted by: Chaos_Hippy [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 30, 2005 11:17 PM

Happy birthday, Wil! (January 6th, 1971 myself, weirdly the very same day, Wednesday that actress Joey Lauren Adams was born in.)

Anyway - I'm watching "In a Mirror, Darkly" and wondering. Could Slar the Gorn in the normal universe be the same one who fought Kirk in "Arena", as in this was the same Gorn, except 100 years younger. A reptile species like the Gorn could well outlive humans.

That would mean that Gorn elders may be slower like the Gorn that fought Kirk was. It would explain how easy it was for Kirk to fight it. A Gorn as old as that one would naturally be the captain, never leaving the bridge but still commanding out orders to his pack. Imagine the horor of a YOUNGER Gorn mercilessly slaughtering helpless Kirk within seconds of the Metrons setting down one from each side.

I should pose this question for Dr. Hal Robins - He would know this stuff for certain.

Hey Wil-
I hope you're having a molto groovy birthday weekend!

I always thought you were a lot younger than me. We're only a year and a half apart. Oh well. Surprise surprise. Happy birthday... old man. :)

By the way, how are you FEELING? Did you survive the "trifecta"? Would be good to hear an update.

Hello Mr. Wheaton,

This is the first time I've come to your blog and I see it's your birthday! The 20th was my birthday (I turned 24). See, it's true... all the cool people were born in July!

Happy (belated) Birthday buddy! You rocked me hard in Toy Soldiers....

I can't recall any details about my last five birthdays, as I got quite drunk celebrating each one. I'm sure I did something as outrageous as running around my lawn in my underwear, shouting to the heavens (or, perhaps, something worse); I just wish I could remember...

Happy belated Birthday, Mr Wheaton!

I found this today. I'm sure you already have your own.

And having recently discovered that I am pregnant, I sit here wondering if my soon-to-be baby will someday be dancing around on our lawn in their underwear, on their birthday. hahaha Thanks for THAT image!!! (teasing)

Congrats on third place, bday boy!

I just wanted to point out that the number 3 represents Chaos. So effectively 33 is double-chaos. Well Wil, I hope you enjoy the Chaos to come this year.

I never realized how many little girls out there
just like me who harbored an intense crush on you
even though you are ten years older than I am. Now Iwill let the world know, with pride, that I
have been a fan of yours since I was twelve, and
still am. Also I just bid on a photo from Star
Trek:TNG you autographed (the cutest picture
ever) and I really enjoyed your book. WFS was the
FUNNIEST thing I have read in a long time. And
all those Wesley Crusher haters can go @#$%
themselves.

Sorry I missed your birthday. I hope you had a great one.

I turned 34 two weeks ago. I didn't realize we were so close in age. I didn't see TNG until 1989 and didn't know enough to realize that the show had been taped years before. It was easy to make that assumption back then when the channel I watched it on touted it as new and Al Gore hadn't invented the internets yet.

33 is a magic number. Enjoy it. *goes back to complaining about music being too loud per old person code*

Belated birthday greetings, fellow Leo. (I turn 35 on 8/17 - always thought I was more than two years older than you. Suddenly I feel less old.)

In our family, birthdays continue til all the cake is gone.

Dr. Howll reploes to my question -

Dear Dr. Howll,

Could a reptile species like the Gorn outlive humans and if so by how much approximately?

Governor Rocknar

Dear Governor Rocknar,
The Gorn captain, a mature specimen, was most probably a female, as these tend to be more aggressive and robust than the males. A heterotherm, with variable metabolic rates and biological stratagems for maintaining body heat, the Gorn warrior was probably, as you suggest, a long-liver. A reptilian biped of the Gorn's mass might be expected to have evolved an insulating integument, but shows no sign of it in "Arena," indicating that such a being is the product of a planet with an overall greater basal temperature than that of Earth. The Gorn homeworld is likely to have a gravity and temperature higher than terrestrial standard; thus the one
