radio silence

Some days, you just have to accept that you're not destined to do the things you want to do. You just have to say, "I did my best, but it's just not going to happen."

Like this fucking podcast, for example. After spending nearly three hours working on it yesterday, only to have my machine completely eat all of it and leave me with nothing but an empty feeling and a tiny ball of rage to show for it, I sat back down today to give it another go. As a bonus, I even convinced my wife to let me take out the old iRiver and ask her some questions about dating, and then being married to a geek. It was awesome.

However, the gods had other plans, because when I imported my audio from my iRiver to my Powerbook, it was totally useless, just like it was after the Grand Slam convention. Only this time, instead of being totally blown out, it decided that it needed to skip all over the place and drop out about every three seconds. I've discovered that the only thing this particular iRiver is good for is hitting with a sledgehammer, then setting on fire, stomping into a ball of goo, and launching at the invading Viking army via a trebuchet. (And it's not even very good for that, to be honest.)

This really needs to just work. I really need to be able to just sit down, take what's in my head, and put it into a recording. It's clear to me that if I want to do this podcast on any regular schedule, it has to be as technologically easy as it is for me to write, and I just don't have the tools for that right now. I have to get some sort of reliable recording rig that is NOT a USB headset into fucking Garageband that crashes, and the iRiver that decides to just stop working one day. I need stuff that just works.

This is all a roundabout way of saying: I'm really frustrated, and really upset that I've poured five hours of my time into this fucking thing, and I have nothing to show for it. It's the end of the week, I'm hungry and cranky, and instead of trying to start all over again and force a show out by the end of the day today, I'm going offline for several hours, to have dinner with my wife. Thank you all for your questions and the time you spent asking them; I'll do my very best to get the technical side of things worked out quickly, so your time will not have been wasted, as well.

Have a great weekend, everyone. Please drive safely.

the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch hiker can have

Today is Towel Day, a day when all geeks can carry their towels with them in tribute to the hoopiest frood of them all, Douglas Adams.

I absolutely love that I'm recording an all-geek podcast on this most sacred of days.

Updated: Oh! You know what I love even more? Spending 2.5 hours working on the podcast, then losing the entire thing to some weird confluence of system lockups and crashes.

I'm taking a long, long, long don't-break-anything walk, and I'll try again in the morning. Sigh.

radio free burrito: all geek edition

I think it's time for a new episode of Radio Free Burrito, don't you?

I had a super good time with episode eight, which was entirely Q&A, so how about this experiment:  I'll do another Q&A show, and focus it on a single topic, guided by whatever is on your mind: The topic is Geek. (Hey, you should go with what you know, right?)

Send your questions to ask at wilwheaton dot net, (with a descriptive subject line, please) and I'll get a new show out by Friday.

box of rain

I'm working on WWdN today (about to stop and walk my dogs; the rain has broken, and it's quite beautiful outside right now) and I thought I'd share a couple of links for any readers who found me in Exile, rather than following me over from WWdN.

The first is something I wrote a long, long time ago, when WWdN first started. I knew people would be coming to my site with lots of preconceptions, and I wanted to take a shot at challenging them. I also had a tragic-but-true story which started this whole blogging thing for me, and is one of the first narrative non-fiction things I ever wrote:

If this is your first time here, you should read this.

The second is a couple of links to a reading I did from Just a Geek and Dancing Barefoot at Gnomedex a couple of years ago. It's not the best performance of all time, and I tossed in a couple of ad-libs that in retrospect don't work (see if you can spot them!) but

You can now see or hear me read from my books Just A Geek and Dancing Barefoot! If you like what you hear, you may want to pick up a copy of Just A Geek: Teh Audiobook. Or not. Whatever. I'm not the boss of you.

Oh! And even though I'm putting my photos into flickr these days, I have an extensive gallery that's filled with really great stuff, including a HAWESOME series from a road trip Anne and I took a few years ago. Man, I really love WWdN. Working on it brings back a flood of memories, and I can't wait to get back home.

question for the podcasters

Rfb_fast_working I've been working on a new episode of RFB most of this morning, and I'm incredibly sad to reach the conclusion that it's just not going to happen.

I don't have anything original or interesting to say, but I figured it wouldn't be the biggest deal, because the bulk of the show would be audio from the Star Trek convention and my audition on Tuesday. The big problem is, that audio is just for shit. It's so blown out that listening to it gave me a headache and actually made me feel a little sick to my stomach by the time I gave up trying to clean it up in garageband.

I've been using an iRiver 795; I've noticed that the last few times I've used it, the built-in mic is so sensitive, that with the encoder set at 44 kHz and 160Kbps, unless I'm speaking very quietly or there is absolutely no ambient noise, the audio is useless at best, and painful at worst. I've tried the line-in with a clip-on mic, but without some sort of pre-processing, the levels are too low.

So, can any of you experienced radio people or podcasters out there suggest an extremely portable, very affordable solution to my audio problem?

(Thanks to Matt D. for catching a picture of the official RFB truck in action!)

Radio Free Burrito Episode 8

Shellymortonlogo Today, it's a brief political rant (you have been warned), then it's all questions and answers, no stupid meta-talk about what I'm going to do, just getting down to it and having a good time.

A lot of people have asked if I can change the numbering of the episodes; I did that on this one. It's called 008.RadioFreeBurrito. I hope that works for ya.

Show Notes:

  • This episode is long. In fact, it's way over an hour, so . . . uh . . . get comfortable, I guess. It's 25.6 MB (!)
  • If I didn't answer your question here, it's not a reflection on you or your question; it just means that I couldn't think of a worthwhile answer.
  • I feel like I hit my stride somewhere around the thirty-minute mark. I could feel a change in my body, and I felt more relaxed, more entertained, and happier. I think it comes across in the show, so I thought I'd comment on it.
  • Also, at the 33-minute mark, where I'm talking about "Americanizing Shelly," Garageband band ran out of space, so I had to export, open a new file, and combine the two in Audacity (yeah, I forgot to set the time and tempo to allow for maximum talky-talky. It's jarring, but you didn't miss anything good, I promise.
  • A picture of me posing with Pigs-n-Space can be seen at the Muppet Wiki. Oh my. Thanks, mdstudio. I think.
  • Comments can be sent to podcast at wil wheaton dot net, questions can be sent to ask at wil wheaton dot net. Please use a descriptive subject line.
  • The image I chose for this show was sent to me by WWdN:iX reader Shelly. Thanks, Shelly!

Radio Free Burrito Episode 7

Marclogo Well, here's episode seven. I went over ten minutes, but I think that's okay. This episode focuses on two things: how the ten minute challenge is going, and how the blog in general is going. Warning: I'm feeling really unhappy right now, and I talk about that, too.

Radio Free Burrito Episode 6

Towerlogo Here is Radio Free Burrito Episode Six, as the great ten-minutes-per day experiment moves on to day two. I've already figured out that ten minutes is just not enough time for a long-winded, tangent-prone guy like myself, so I don't know if trading off manageable time for more content is really worth it. We'll find out in a few days, I guess.

Thank you so much to everyone who has sent in logos! Holy crap, you are a talented bunch of people. I'm going to try on lots of different ones this week, send them all out on dates with the Crushinator, and figure out which logo will be permanent via a reality tv show in the coming weeks. If you haven't sent your logo idea in, please don't feel like you missed the boat; I'd still love to see what you guys come up with, and there's a very good chance I'll be able to use more than one logo for different things.

Show Notes:

  • I am a moran. I know it's episode six, but I say "This is episode seven" at the beginning. Numbers, like math, are hard. I blame it on the date, the rain, and a bad spot of corned beef.
  • The website I talked about is ChangeThis.com.
  • My tune is called Heroes, and it was created in GarageBand. I may release it on its own at some point in the future.
  • As I mentioned near the end of the show, I'll be offering a signed, limited edition chapbook preview of a few stories from Do You Want Kids With That at the convention this weekend. If I have any left over after the show, I'll sell whatever's left through my blog.
  • The intro music is Atomic, by Blondie.
  • Comments can be sent to podcast at wil wheaton dot net, questions can be sent to ask at wil wheaton dot net. Please use a descriptive subject line.
  • The image I chose for this show was sent to me by WWdN:iX reader Chuck, from airbrushmypic.com.

  • This episode is 10:19 and weighs in at 4.4 MB.

Anyway, here it is. Your feedback is always appreciated, and thanks for listening.

Radio Free Burrito Episode 5

15118203_32335060cf_m I issued myself a challenge a few weeks ago: do one ten-minute podcast a day for a week. Then I went and got sick, and wasn't in any shape to do begin the challenge . . . until tonight.

I thought that it would be very manageable to commit ten minutes per day to do a show, but don't know if I like the format; ten minutes is hardly enough time to get started, let alone do an entire show, so I will thank in advance those of you who endure this little experiment with me over the next few days. I am nearly positive that by the end of the week, I'll be back to 37 minutes at a time.

Oh, and before I get into the show notes: does someone want to do a Radio Free Burrito logo? I am thinking something simple that is inspired by the old RKO logo (a radio tower on top of the earth) or something similar like that. I'm a big fan of simple, 1940s-looking radio design, if you know what I'm talking about.

If any of you guys with crazy Photoshop or GIMP skills want to send me something, I'd love to see it. If I pick your design, I'll give you credit by name and with a link to your website or blog, and I'll send you an autographed book. I should probably put in some legal language, like, uh, anything you send me becomes my property, and I can do whatever I want with it, even put it into a shotgun wedding with the Crushinator. You can put "Wil Wheaton's Radio Free Burrito" and use the tagline ". . . an interesting podcast" if you want.

Here are a few show notes for this very brief episode:

  • The music comes from Mike Doughty's "Down on the River by the Sugar Plant," which is on Skittish and Rockity Roll. I just realized that I used a song which you can't download from his site by mistake, so I hope he doesn't sue me or kick my ass. In any case, I encourage you to buy his albums, because they totally fucking rule.
  • Comments can be sent to podcast at wil wheaton dot net, questions can be sent to ask at wil wheaton dot net. Please use a descriptive subject line.
  • Radio Free Burrito is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 License.
  • This episode is 10:16 and weighs in at 4.1 MB.

Okay, that's it for today. I hope you enjoy the abbreviated Radio Free Burrito. Thanks for listening.

Radio Free Burrito Episode 4

Greenslime_1 Yes, it is true! At long last, the long-overdue Episode Four is here. According to certain other episode-numbered series, this should be the episode that grabs everyone's attention and establishes me as a Force to be reckoned with . . . but it will be the next episode that proves to be my best ever, one which I'll never be able to top.

I guess I should figure out a way to get a hold of Lawrence Kasdan, huh?

This episode is another audio diary one, this time centered around an audition I had this morning for a new Nickelodeon animated series. It was an awesome audition, thanks entirely to the totally cool people who I read for, who made me feel welcome, and enthusiastically worked with me to bring my version of this character to life. (I know some of you read my blog, so thank you for doing that. I had an awesome time today. You guys rock.)

The audio diary is 33 minutes long, so I didn't do Q&A in this show, but it will be back in the next show. In fact, I'll devote most of the next show to Q&A, since many of you have written in that you like that, and it's pretty damn easy for me to answer questions about myself.

Show Notes:

  • The intro music is "Gone for Good" by The Shins, from their album Chutes Too Narrow. In Garden State, Natalie Portman says that The Shins will change your life, and plays New Slang to back up this bold statement. I think New Slang is a great song, but it doesn't have the emotional resonance for me that Gone for Good does. Why? Listen to the podcast to find out. For those of you scoring at home, the updated board should read Garden State: 0 Wil: 1
  • The link to save Teen Titans is: http://www.titanstower.com/source/animated/saveseason6.html
  • The song you heard from Nada Surf is Neither Heaven Nor Space, and it's off their nearly-perfect album Let Go.
  • There's a picture from inside Nickelodeon, which I snapped with my super-stealth cameraphone, in my Buzznet blog. I meant to mention this months ago, but Buzznet has this thing where you can make posters, calendars, books, or postcards from your Buzznet images. I have a book filled with images taken up until last summer, and it's really cool.

The entire show is 47 minutes long (ouch. sorry about that.) and weighs in at 18.8MB. Enjoy!

Radio Free Burrito Episode 3 (fixed. again.)

This episode of The Burrito is the longest, yet, weighing in at 37 minutes. It was so long, in fact, that I had to break it into two parts in garage band, and use audacity to join them together. However, it's relatively small; just 15.2MB. I listened to it in headphones and through my Powerbook's speakers, and it sounds fine to me, but let me know if you think it sucks. You can also let me know if you like it, of course.

I'm not very happy with this episode, as I fell into one of my chief complaints about podcasts in general: it rapidly devolves into just some guy talking about bullshit. I mostly did the show so I could stay on the weekly schedule, and I really just wanted to share this song that I made in garageband, because I think it's kind of cool.

I'm always interested in feedback which can be sent to podcast at wil wheaton dot net. The feedback some listeners have chosen to send in has been extremely useful, whether it's praise or constructive criticism, so thank you all for that. Questions for next week's show, which will focus exclusively on family and holiday themes, can be sent to ask at wil wheaton dot net.

Anyway, If you have 37 minutes to spend listening to me blather on about bullshit, please enjoy: Download radio_free_burrito_episode_three.mp3 <-- the second fixed version. The first one had huge gaps where I addicentally erased a track, while the second one had an additional track layered over the beginning that I didn't delete when I replaced the first deleted track, for fuck's sake. But this should be the "good" version now, and if you have one of the earlier versions, hermetically seal it and start planning for your retirement.

Show Notes:

  • Yes, this should be called Episode Two. I am an idiot.
  • Continuing the "I'm an idiot" meme, I inadvertently deleted an entire track, which took some of the bumpers with it. This results in about 20 seconds of silence around the 5 minute mark. I will repair this, and replace the current file later tonight. Sorry about that. Okay, thanks to some audacity-fu and a bit of garageband voodoo, I fixed it. Nothing to hear here. Move along.
  • The intro music comes from Squirrel Nut Zippers' 1996 gold album, Hot. The song is titled "Hell."
  • My tune is called "Lakeside Shadow." I made it in Garageband.
  • Thanks for listening, and have a great weekend!

Radio Free Burrito Episode One

Whitevan I can't believe I already did another podcast, but I had ideas, and they needed to come out of my brains, so here we are.

I'm going to tell you the complete truth: This isn't the greatest thing ever, but I really had fun putting this show together, and I think I'm officially hooked on doing these shows. As long as it doesn't completely take over my life, I'll do everything I can to get a new episode up every week. Around episode four or five, when I've climbed a little higher up the learning curve, I'll even see if I can get this into iTunes so subscribing is easier.

Okay. How about some show notes? That's kind of cool, isn't it?

Notes for Episode One:

  • Feedback and reflections on Episode Zero
  • Bumpers!
  • An audio diary, featuring an audition, some random thoughts around town, a bit of really horrible singing, and an interview about Stand By Me.
  • Very brief Q&A.

This week's show is much, much smaller than episode zero, weighing in at a much friendlier 13.3 MB, but still just over 30 minutes. I'm still not ready for primetime, but I feel much more comfortable than I did last week, and had a great time putting this together.

Questions can be sent to ask at wil wheaton dot net and comments can be sent to podcast at wil wheaton dot net.

Also, until I figure out a more appropriate license, RFB will be released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 License.

Okay? Get to listening!

Afterthoughts:

  • Don't Stop Believin' by Journey
  • Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day
  • Title and Registration The New Year by Death Cab for Cutie (that's what I get for doing this list from memory.)
  • Radio Cure by Wilco
  • Kamera by Wilco
  • Tear Stained Eye, by Son Volt

Radio Free Burrito Episode Zero

Alive Well, here it is! It's alive!

As I wrote earlier today, "It will either be really cool, or the stupidest fucking thing in history, and I'll proceed accordingly." My initial feeling is that it falls somewhere in the middle: it's longer than I wanted, and it's a little unfocused, but I'm willing to allow myself the freedom to make as many mistakes as it takes to either come up with something cool, or accept that I just don't have what it takes to make a podcast.

Observations on getting this thing from my brains to your ears: I thought the recording would be very hard, but it was actually super easy. I've tried in Audacity several times before, and it never wants to work, so today I just followed the instructions from Apple for creating podcasts in Garageband, and it was simple and easy. But holy shit the converting and the uploading was so hard, I felt like I had no thumbs and an IQ of 24. I'm sorry to report that this episode is only available in the stupid, proprietary, Apple AAC format, but that's the only format I could get to upload (the .aiff file was over 300MB, and TypePad just wouldn't let me upload it. That was really annoying.)

So now I need to know what you, the audience, think. What would you like more of? Less of? Is it too long? Is it too narrowly focused, or not broad enough? Most importantly: when it was over, did you feel like I earned your 30 minutes, or did you feel like you wasted your time?

Heh. The last time I felt this nervous about releasing something into the wild, it was the first version of Dancing Barefoot. This is both cool and scary.

Afterthought: I just realized that I stupidly recorded this thing in super-ultra-hyper-mega-stereo, when nifty-old-mono would have been just fine. The result is a ridiculously large file (71.8 MB) which I can only leave up for a few hours before I blow through all my bandwidth. I'll see if I can convert the file I have to mono, and if not, look for Episode .05 to hit the airwaves in the next 48 hours. Yeah, I am really a moran. iTunes won't let me convert it to mp3, and Audacity won't even open it. So this file will stay up until about 8:00 PM Pacific time, when I'll have to take it down. If someone wants to mirror the file, go nuts. Gods, I am sofa king stupid. I blame my nervousness for this ultrarookie error. When you mock, please mock me gently.

AfterthoughtAfterthought: I owe Shane Nickerson a huge debt of gratitude, because he pointed out to me my stupid mistake. I'll reveal my shame a bit later on. In the meantime, here is a .mp3 file, which is much smaller: "only" 27.3MB:

WWdN podcast idea

I am a big fan of the Family Guy Freakin' Podcast. I love hearing the people who create the show talk about how they do it, and it's especially awesome to hear how much they obviously like each other, and the work they do.

Near the end of the podcast, they always answer some listener e-mail (I sent one last week; I don't know if they answered it or not and they totally answered it on the podcast for Fat Guy Strangler, and they didn't even make fun of me. Freakin' Sweet!) and it's always funny and informative.

So I thought, "Hey, I can be funny and informative, and I want to do a podcast . . ."

So let's give this a try: Send me a question or comment, and I'll respond in a podcast. It'll be sort of like Ask Wil Wheaton Anything but you listen to it and it's not at Slashdot. It will either be really cool, or the stupidest fucking thing in history, and I'll proceed accordingly.

Questions or comments can be sent to ask at wil wheaton dot net. When I have enough questions to fill about seven minutes of podcasting, I'll produce and publish it.

UPDATE: Wow. A bunch of questions have flooded in today, and I already threw away a podcast that was over 40 minutes long where I tried to answer them all. I mean, I think I'm a swell guy and all, but forty minutes of me rambling on is about 32 minutes too much.

So I pulled out a few that I think I can give interesting answers to, and I'm about to start recording them. I should have Radio Free Burrito Episode Zero up in a few hours. Huge thanks to everyone who has sent in questions. :)
